Unlocking opportunities in Malawi’s tourism sector
In a move aimed at digitising Malawi’s tourism sector, a local technology startup, Kwenda, has signed a partnership agreement with the Malawi Tourism Council (MTC). This collaboration will enable MTC members, including hotels, guesthouses, and B&Bs, to list their accommodation services on the Kwenda platform, making them accessible to a global audience. Through this new digital marketplace, international travellers will be able to easily find, book, and pay for services, simplifying the travel experience to the Warm Heart of Africa.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, MTC Executive Director Memory Momba Kamthunzi emphasised the organisation’s commitment to embracing digital innovation. The partnership is expected to significantly increase bookings and provide a new marketing channel for members. According to Kwenda founder and managing director Lumbani Gondwe, the platform aims to be a trusted solution for attracting clients both before and during their trip to Malawi. While MTC members will receive a complimentary five-month listing, the platform is open to all tourism players. “The key is to capture the entire tourism ecosystem,” Gondwe said.

Digitising Malawi Tourism
Launched in July 2024, Kwenda’s mission is to create an end-to-end digital infrastructure for travel and hospitality across Malawi and the Southern Africa region. The company has already made a name for itself as a leading provider of e-ticketing for major events, including football matches, concerts, and festivals like the Lake of Stars Festival.
The Malawi Government has recently been pushing its ATM strategy focused on boosting three key sectors: Agriculture, Tourism, and Mining. The government has identified these as the primary drivers for economic growth, job creation, and increasing foreign exchange earnings, which are crucial for achieving the long-term goals of the Malawi 2063 vision. Tourism is a vital component of this strategy because it serves as a significant source of foreign currency and has a high potential for job creation across various related industries.
